If you have never heard of Le Gateau Chocolat before then you are in for a big treat. I first heard about this gorgeous man as the ‘must see’ act at the Edinburgh Fringe back in 2013 and I was blown away by his performance. Cue an hour of laughter, entertainment, hilarious costume changes and above all an amazing voice.
This Nigerian-born boy grew up in London and achieved all what’s expected of him: a good education, a strong sense of what’s right and wrong, a degree in law and – a love for opera, drag and show business. Le Gateau Chocolat is a one-of-a-kind sensation in cabaret. A larger-than-life vocal talent who can belt out a tumultuous array of hits with his booming baritone and big personality, all parceled up in a fabulous layer of lustrous lycra and sequined dresses.
His shows tell the tale of a man who is completely self-aware of his diva demeanour and explicitly illustrate his love for the glamour and extravagance that come hand in hand with being a drag queen. However, his performances also describe the fears, truths and realities of growing up in a world that can be so divisive in the acceptance of what it considers to be normal.
Also, his mother doesn’t know about what he does. Wow!
Le Gateau Chocolat is an experienced compere and host who can tie an evening together with his larger-than-life personality and a number of outrageous costume changes and would be just the perfect entertainment for a wedding. His 15-20 minute performance to backing tracks will feature 4 songs from his existing repertoire with inter song patter and audience interaction.
I can’t wait for the day that I have a wedding that features Le Gateau Chocolat as the entertainment – but for now I am excited to see him again at the Edinburgh Fringe this year!
